Mar y Tierra, Sea and Earth
This California coast project started about twenty years ago. It existed in my memory and in my past. Though I had photographed the coast previously and had longed to go back to the area, other commitments and responsibilities kept me away. In 2008, I was able to once again return to this area. I would be traveling down the coast from San Francisco to Carmel, trying to recall a past that while distant, did not seem so far away.
As I headed down the coast, I was intrigued and yet somewhat upset by some of the changes. Though a great deal had changed, much had thankfully remained the same. It was still as I remembered, a captivating place. I concentrated on the splendor of the coast itself. I wanted to capture the wonder and beauty that surrounded me. With each click of the shutter, I became more and more in tune with nature. It was as if I was seeing this coast for the very first time.
What started off as some preconceived notion of finding the past, seemed to take on a new meaning and a new purpose. I was moved to create a body of work that was not only about the coast, but also about those things that are often found coexisting along the coast. I wanted to create a body of work that would bring together elements from both the sea and the earth – MAR Y TIERRA. But this body of work has become much more than that. With the ever growing threat of climate change these images now seem somewhat fragile and vulnerable. Close-up and distance views help me describe this natural landscape in a way that conveys its uncertainty.
