From the first images I saw of the Grand Canyon as a child to my later introduction to the photographs of Eliot Porter and Ansel Adams, I have always been intrigued by the Southwest. Nothing, however, prepared me for the visual feast that this unique landscape presented when I first laid eyes on it.
It is inconceivable to look at these canyons and rock formations and not be in total awe of the power and ferocity of nature. This is truly a surreal landscape. The deep canyons, the hoodoos, and the huge rock formations become almost too much to take in, overwhelming the senses at times.
Though the colors in the Southwest are beautifully rich, they were so intense and vibrant that they became almost blinding. It was because of this, that I choose to work in black and white. I needed to see beyond the colors and capture what I was experiencing in its purest form.
With this portfolio of images, I traveled the Southwest, from Utah to Arizona to Nevada to New Mexico. I photographed Zion, Capitol Reef, Bryce, Arches, Canyonlands, Kodachrome Basin, Valley of Fire, Goblin Valley, and the Grand Canyon. Each location brought on new experiences and new challenges. No two areas were alike. Each sight I encountered was truly unique with varying landscapes, colors, and light.
With this landscape, I knew I needed to express what I was seeing and feeling. I needed to somehow convey what my senses were taking in. I realized that these images were not only about the vastness or the power of nature, but also about its fragility and vulnerability. It was about the light, the clouds, the rocks, the canyons, the trees, and the petroglyphs. They were about the whole Southwest experience.
These images are my record of what now exists and will hopefully continue to be enjoyed by future generations. It was inspired by my desire to document our fragile earth.
